The Second Battle of Manassas (or the Second Battle of Bull Run as the Union called it) was fought near the town on 28-30 August 1862. At that time, Manassas Junction was little more than a railroad crossing, but a strategic one, with rails leading to Richmond, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and the Shenandoah Valley. Despite these two Confederate victories, Manassas Junction was in Union hands for most of the war.
Rico says that, hopefully, his friend Doug Coe will want to make another journey to see his brother in Manassas.

Rico says he was in North Carolina to attend his only reenactment of 2011, at Fort Branch. He showed up in his Federal uniform, as the locals have more than enough Confederates.
At the reenactment, Rico hung out with a Federal artillery unit (photo), and almost got stomped by the cavalry battle (which is kinda wimpy; they can't fire their pistols and can only tink their sabers together) but he did get to fire (and thus have to clean; bummer) his musket.
While next year is the actual 150th anniversary of the tiny battle there, this was the only opportunity he had to attend one in 2011. It was overcast and cool on Saturday, but warmer on Sunday.
(Rico says he went in mufti on Sunday; too much nuisance for not enough Gasm.)

In July 1861, the first major land battle of the American Civil War, the First Battle of Manassas, known to the Union as the First Battle of Bull Run, was fought near the town. Manassas will commemorate the 150th anniversary of First Battle of Manassas on 21–24 July 2011.
Rico says he did not attend but, by all reports, it was way too hot to be enjoyable...

In addition to it being his 59th birthday, Rico says he was going to be there, but one of the drivers for the trip had to suddenly go to the hospital.
